European Hornets

Large, ¾-1 3/8″

Brown and yellow coloration

Make unprotected brown nests

Nests are built in hollow trees, barns, out buildings, hollow walls, attics, and abandoned bee hives

Prefer a more forested environment

Nests may be in human occupied areas

They are attracted to lights, and may be attracted to structures with lights

May kill plants trying to feed on sap/nectar

Relatively non-aggressive near the nest, but there is still some potential for a stinging hazard

Stings may be life threatening in sensitive individuals

Make the area less attractive for nesting and feeding purposes

The nest will be located and treated with an appropriate product if necessary

European hornets are beneficial organisms and are therefore only controlled when they pose an immediate threat
